What is the CBSE Best of 5 Rule?

CBSE's Best of 5 rule applies to Class 10 board examinations. Instead of averaging all 6 subjects a student typically appears in, the percentage and CGPA are calculated based on only 5 subjects:

  • English — always compulsory and always counted
  • Best 4 remaining subjects — the 4 subjects with the highest marks out of all other papers attempted

This rule benefits students who may have performed poorly in one elective subject. The weakest subject is excluded from the aggregate.

Step-by-Step Example

Suppose a student has 6 subjects:

Subject Marks (out of 100) Included?
English78✓ Compulsory
Mathematics92✓ Best 4
Science85✓ Best 4
Social Science80✓ Best 4
Hindi71✓ Best 4
IT / Computer62✗ Excluded (lowest)

Best of 5 Total = 78 + 92 + 85 + 80 + 71 = 406 out of 500

Percentage = (406 ÷ 500) × 100 = 81.2%

CBSE Grade Point Scale

Marks Range Grade Grade Points
91 – 100A110
81 – 90A29
71 – 80B18
61 – 70B27
51 – 60C16
41 – 50C25
33 – 40D4
21 – 32E1
0 – 20E2

CGPA to Percentage Conversion (CBSE)

Percentage = CGPA × 9.5

CBSE uses this indicative formula on mark-sheets and certificates. Examples:

  • CGPA 10.0 → 95%
  • CGPA 9.2 → 87.4%
  • CGPA 8.5 → 80.75%
  • CGPA 7.8 → 74.1%
  • CGPA 6.0 → 57%

This is an indicative conversion — actual marks-to-percentage can differ slightly from board to board and year to year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is English always compulsory in CBSE Best of 5?

Yes. English is always counted as one of the 5 subjects. The other 4 are automatically the highest-scoring subjects from the remaining papers.

What if a student only has 5 subjects?

If the student appeared in exactly 5 subjects, all 5 are included in the calculation — the "best of" selection does not exclude the lowest since there is nothing to exclude.

Does the 6th subject matter for CBSE aggregate?

Officially, the 6th subject (lowest) is excluded from the Best of 5 aggregate for percentage and CGPA. However, some colleges may consider marks in all 6 subjects for their own admission criteria.

How do I calculate CGPA from Best of 5?

Convert each subject's marks to grade points using the CBSE grade scale. Add the 5 grade points (English + best 4) and divide by 5. Example: 10 + 9 + 9 + 8 + 8 = 44 ÷ 5 = CGPA 8.8.

What is a good CGPA in CBSE Class 10?

A CGPA of 9.0 or above (equivalent to roughly 85.5%+) is considered excellent. 8.0–8.9 is very good, and 7.0–7.9 is good. For science stream admissions in Class 11, many schools require CGPA 8.0+ in Science and Maths.
